Manchester Physio Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy is a water based treatment provided by the physiotherapists at Manchester Physio. You do not need to be able to swim or put your head under the water to do hydrotherapy. The pool is chest height and numerous floatation aids and equipment are used during the session and there is always at least one physiotherapist with each patient. Hydrotherapy can be used to treat individuals with a huge range of conditions. The types of conditions treated include:
  • Musculoskeletal following joint, muscle, ligament injury

  • Neurological following brain or spinal cord injury (eg stroke, TBI, MS, spinal cord injury)

  • Paediatric following musculoskeletal or neurological injury

  • Surgical following surgical procedures

  • Chronic pain (eg Fibromyalgia, ME)
The warm water of the hydrotherapy pool relaxes tight muscle groups and eases stiff joints.

Hydrotherapy programmes utilise the properties of water such as increased buoyancy, resistance and turbulence to help increase range of movement, reduce pain, increase strength, increase co-ordination and increase control.

Individuals with mobility problems can benefit from hydrotherapy as, with the support of the water, they are able to do things that they are unable to do on dry land. With the specialist monitoring and progression of exercises by a physiotherapist mobility can be improved.

Hydrotherapy can also be used to accelerate healing and recovery in patient that are non-weight bearing or partial weight bearing by performing exercises in the water.

Hydrotherapy can:
  • Reduce pain
  • Reduce muscle spasm
  • Increase range of movement
  • Strengthen muscles
  • Re-educate movement patterns
  • Increase balance
  • Increase co-ordination
  • stimulate circulation
Hydrotherapy is a very effective type of treatment that can benefit many different individuals. Children with neurological and musculoskeletal conditions enjoy hydrotherapy as it is therapeutic play and allows them to move in ways in which they are only able to in the hydrotherapy pool.

To arrange a hydrotherapy assessment (on dry land for the assessment) please call Manchester Physio on 0161 883 0077 or email: office@manchesterphysio.co.uk

"I had been having back problems for years and tried so many different treatments but with no success. I saw a physio at Manchester Physio and felt an improvement after just 2 sessions. I would recommend anyone needing a physiotherapist here!"
